BIRMINGHAM, AL, July 31, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Tahiera Monique Brown will serve as a panelist for the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Dentistry on Monday, August 2, 2010. The topic of the forum is "Dentistry and Dental Health: Sociocultural Factors".

The author recalls one abusive situation that involved damage to her teeth. She said: "my Stepfather knocked my teeth loose with the butt of his shotgun". Her mother did not take her to the dentist. "She just placed her hand across my mouth, and pressed my teeth back in", Brown says.

The author wants to leave a positive message by telling her story. She wants to share with the students [the techniques that] medical professionals who worked with detectives in her legal case against a violent perpetrator. The actions they took to save her life helped to maintain the safety of her children while she was in a coma.

The ultimate goal of this presentation and discussion is to equip dentists with the tools that they need to help them to intervene in situations where they have patients who may be experiencing horrific domestic violence situations. This type of awareness, and actions that dentists can take, will save lives.

Tahiera Monique Brown is an author, speaker, and consultant. She is President and CEO of Tavine'ra Publishing, LLC. Tavine'ra Publishing is a Birmingham based Book Publishing Company. She recently established The Interlocking of Arms Non Profit to leverage support for program delivery to disadvantaged individuals, families, and distressed communities, in need of critical domestic violence awareness education.
