She was evaluator on numerous National Cancer Institute research grants at MD Anderson and principal investigator on state grants to develop educational materials healthcare professionals.

Dr. Smith has authored six books and over 40 peer-reviewed articles in healthcare, psychology and business. She has performed graduate-level teaching in business including organizational behavior and theory, organizational development, communications, motivation, and productivity at Rice University, University of Houston Clear Lake, Houston Baptist University, and the Air Force Institute of Technology.
