Joanne Sappo Recognized for Innovation in Special Needs Education
Founder and Director of the Sappo School leads educational efforts to cater to students with emotional disorders and reading disabilities

Joanne Sappo is a pioneer in private education, having founded a private school catering to students afflicted with anxiety disorders, ADD/ADHD, reactive attachment disorder, school phobias, dyslexia and other reading disabilities. Located in Medford, New York, the NYS approved school welcomes 40 students per year and provides a "therapeutic environment which allows each student to develop self-awareness and self-management skills in order to achieve school and life success." In fact, many of its graduating students, who were once considered "unteachable," go on to enroll in top competitive universities and maintain high grade point averages.

Ms. Sappo lends 36 years of professional expertise to such endeavors and is recognized for her authority in special education. Ms. Sappo is distinguished by her perseverance in the field and holds a degree in educational administration from Columbia College. She is also a certified Orton-Gillingham Practitioner and a certified diagnostician. Prior to opening the Sappo School, Ms. Sappo gained invaluable experience as an elementary school teacher.
